sData from the official European Statistics Office, published on the eve of World Bee Day, which is celebrated on August 20, revealed that EU member states imported 173,400 tons of natural honey last year from countries outside the EU, with a value of 405.9 million euros. It exported only 25,500 tons outside the European Union, with a value of 146.6 million euros.
Eurostat indicates that in 2021 Germany was responsible for 30% of total EU honey imports, importing 51,900 tons, followed by Poland, 32,200 tons (19% of EU imports), Belgium with 25,600 ( 15%), Spain with 14,500 tons (8%) and Portugal with 7,100 tons, which is 4% of EU honey imports last year, compared to 6,300 tons in 2020 and 5,400 tons in 2019.
Statistical data indicate that Ukraine was the main source country for honey imports from third world countries last year, reaching 53,800 tons, which represents 31% of the honey imported by EU member states, followed by China with 48 thousand tons (28%), Then Mexico with 48 thousand tons (28%). 15,500 (9%), Argentina 14,400 (8%) and Brazil 7,900 tons (5%).
In terms of honey exports to countries outside the European Union, Spain was the most exporting member country in 2021 (6900 tons), with Portugal exporting only about 180 tons.
