Francisco Andre, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, announced on Thursday that Portugal will contribute 10 million euros to humanitarian aid in Gaza.
The goal, as announced at the Humanitarian Conference on the Civilian Population of Gaza, in Paris, will be to support “the efforts of the United Nations system and other humanitarian organizations on the ground, specifically the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.” The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and the International Committee of the Red Cross.”
The conference brought together the main international actors involved in the response to the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and was held at the Elysee Palace, under the patronage of French President Emmanuel Macron, with the aim of ensuring respect for international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers. As well as expanding access to humanitarian aid and strengthening the international humanitarian response in the areas of health, water, energy and food.
At the conference in Paris, Foreign Minister Francisco André also reiterated Portugal’s commitment to the two-state solution and full respect for international humanitarian law, highlighting the urgent need for an urgent and robust humanitarian response to the situation in the Strip. The conditions are deteriorating daily, in order to alleviate the suffering of all civilians.
