The announcement of the possible resignation of Pedro Sanchez, head of the Spanish government, sparked rumors in Brussels. The Spaniard was not among the list of possible names to succeed Charles Michel as president of the European Council because he was head of the government of one of the largest European economies, but everything changed with the news of his possible resignation. According to the site PoliticianSanchez's name has not only been mentioned for his position on the European Council, but also in the race to be the next Secretary General of NATO.
The current preferred candidate for the presidency of the European Council is António Costa, but some EU members oppose this choice because the former Portuguese Prime Minister is involved in an “influencer operation”. Antonio Costa has not yet been charged and has not been heard, but two courts say the suspicions against the former prime minister are unfounded.
Another option to succeed Charles Michel is Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, a name that is also stirring controversy due to her government's immigration policies.
Pedro Sanchez said that the decision on whether to continue as head of the Spanish government or not will be announced on Monday.
