Passadiços do Paiva, in Arauca, won for the first time the title of “Best Tourist Attraction in Europe”, at this year’s World Travel Awards, winning a category for which global icons were nominated such as the Eiffel Tower (Paris, France) amphitheater in Rome (Italy) or Buckingham Palace (London, England). “A remarkable achievement,” said Arauca Mayor Maria de Belém. The Walkways also won, for the fifth time in a row, the title of “Best Adventure Tourism Attraction in Europe”.
“We were competing with some of the most famous and most visited attractions in the world and won, a remarkable achievement that places us – the Paiva Walkways and the UNESCO World Geopark Arauca as a reference destination in Porto and northern Portugal,” congratulated the President of the Chamber of Deputies. Also among the nominees are the Sagrada Familia (Barcelona, Spain), the Acropolis (Athens, Greece) or the Porto Foundation in Serralves.
Since 2016, Passadiços do Paiva has won titles at the World Travel Awards, considered the “Oscar” of tourism. “It takes a lot of effort and dedication from the entire municipal team, as I include all the controllers of this infrastructure, but also the entire local tourism sector, from accommodation, to catering, not to mention the tourist entertainment companies, so that we can preserve the Paiva lanes At the top of tourism at the European level”, confirms Maria de Belém.
The trails are eight kilometers long on the left bank of the Paiva River, they opened in June 2015 and have since received more than 1.5 million visitors.
In the 29th edition of what is considered the “Oscar” of tourism, Porto was distinguished as the “Best City Destination in Europe”. The Algarve has been named “Europe’s Best Beach Destination” and “Europe’s Best Tourist Destination” award for Lisbon.
