The spread of the Aedes aegypti mosquito is worth fighting and paying attention to every month. However, in the summer the mosquito breeding period is shorter and they reproduce more quickly. To talk about the situation in Santa Cruz do Sul, the Minister of Health, Daniela Domke, gave an interview to Radio Gazeta 107.9 FM Monday afternoon the 30th. According to the file holder, of the 350 samples from the recent survey of the Rapid Index to Aedes aegypti (Liraa), 160 indicated a mosquito infestation.

The minister stressed that every season of the year requires mosquito control, not only because of dengue fever, but also with regard to other diseases that it can transmit, such as chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. “We conducted a survey from January 16 to 23. 2596 properties were examined and 350 samples were collected, resulting in 160 positive samples for Aedes aegypti, that is, we are at risk that is considered very high for the municipality,” said Daniela.
However, right now, according to the minister, Santa Cruz is in a more favorable position than it was in 2021, when there was an outbreak of more than 5 thousand cases. “We still don’t have the total, but we ended 2022 with about 1,600 positive cases, which still could change, as some test results haven’t arrived. But we’re already seeing a sharp decline in positive cases.”

Regarding Liraa’s first report for 2023, Daniela stated that strategies are already being worked out to start the year. According to the municipal health secretary, the survey is very accurate and indicates which neighborhoods had the highest prevalence of mosquitoes and in which containers the samples were found. “In order to control and be able to act in these places, surveillance does not work in a punitive way. We go into the homes to guide them, so they welcome the endemic agents,” he said.

The neighborhood that stood out in the last survey was Ana Neri, with 14 samples. After that, the boroughs of Sinai and Santa Vittoria each had 13 positive samples. Subsequently, Santo Iñácio, 12, and the neighborhood of Esmeralda and Bom Jesus, 11. In addition, according to Daniela Domke, the interior of Santa Cruz is now included in the epidemiological surveillance work.
