Nova Iguaçu encourages mobilization and intensifies actions to combat Aedes aegypti
A major measure to raise awareness and combat Aedes aegypti, which transmits diseases such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya, rallied the residents of Nova Iguacu on Saturday (15). Teams from the Supervisory Authority for Environmental Monitoring (SUVAM), a department linked to the Municipal Health Secretariat (SEMUS), took advantage of the day to tour different neighbourhoods, visiting homes, sheds, junkyards and tire repair shops, among other places, with the aim of guiding residents and workers. about risks, care and prevention, as well as working to eradicate mosquito infestations.
Although densification occurred throughout the city, the Comendador Soares and Austin neighborhoods received particular attention. Places focus on the highest number of confirmed dengue cases and are hard to reach for home visits during the week. Endemic disease agents have made a real joint effort wherever they go.
SUVAM also carried out the service on Rua Ministro Lafaiete de Andrade, one of the main entrances of the neighborhoods into the center of Nova Iguaçu, using specific insecticides with spraying equipment in places that lead to the accumulation of stagnant water, an environment favorable to the development of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
In the first three months of 2023, Nova Iguaçu recorded 112 confirmed cases. For this reason, care is intensified to prevent the appearance of the Aedes aegypti mosquito throughout the year. SUVAM agents visit routinely in all neighborhoods, according to schedule, to inform residents of how to avoid standing water buildup, the correct way to store tires, bottles, and potted plants, among other things.
In Ouro Verde, a district belonging to Comendador Soares, the agents visited an apartment complex of about four thousand properties. Resident Marcella Vitorino, 39, opened her home to the team who searched her backyard and advised her to avoid places where water could accumulate. She agreed to this procedure, who revealed that two members of her family had recently contracted dengue fever.
“This kind of work is great, even more so in this period when dengue fever is back in force and causing many hospitalizations. So it is important that people are aware and help in this work to eradicate mosquitoes,” she says.
At Cacuia, which is from Austin, teams roamed the streets, observing drains, open manholes and other places that could serve as a focus point. Pedro Augusto, 46, has strengthened the role of customers and residents.
He points out that “people need to understand that it is better to prevent the onset of the disease than to take care of this disease in the hospital, for example.”
In addition to locations in Comendador Soares and Austin, mobilization also took place in Cabuçu, Centro, KM 32, Miguel Couto, Posse, Tinguá and Vila de Cava areas.
