James McTeigue worked on all of The Matrix films and when Lana Wachowski came up with the idea for The Matrix Resurrections, the new film, McTeigue was invited again to become a key member of the directing team.
in conversation with colliderMcTeigue, asked about the film’s genesis, confirmed that Warner had long been investigating a possible return to this universe and stated that there was no plan for a sequel.
Here are some spoilers about the movie.
Matrix Resurrections ends in such a way that it leaves the door open for sequels and throughout the film it turns out that a period of time has elapsed that could allow for spin-offs, but Lana has no plans for more films.
“Look, for us, I think, right now it’s just the movie you watched. We don’t have an introduction in mind. We don’t have another part in mind. We don’t have a new trilogy,” says McTeigue.
“But I think the movie is also really open to audience interpretation, like what happened in those 60 years before they saved Neo again or Thomas Anderson to Neo.”
“Ultimately, when Trinity and New speak with the analyst, what do they mean by what will really change? I think there’s room for that, but it’s not in our plans.”
The Matrix Resurrections is currently showing in theaters.
