Recently, last Tuesday, October 25, there was a release of new images provided by NASA. The images in question refer to the Earth and the Moon and were taken thanks to a spacecraft called Lucy.
The revealed images were taken thanks to a test conducted to organize the mission’s calibration, which aims to closely analyze asteroids around Jupiter. As you can see in the image above, it is possible to observe the Earth through logs made from different angles of the cameras on the spacecraft.
However, in the image below, we have the privilege of seeing a slightly more interesting image, which gives us a basic idea of the distance between a land And the moon. In addition, it is interesting to note that the image was taken according to the spacecraft’s proximity to Earth at the time the spacecraft was flying over our planet, during a kind of gravity-assisted maneuver.
With this flyby technique, the spacecraft was able to reach an effective speed to strike Trojan asteroids, which are the goals of its study. Both photos were taken from Site NASA officer. See another picture below:
After reviewing these images, start thinking about the fact that the image of the Moon and Earth was recorded 1.4 million km from the two celestial bodies.
There is no doubting the power in the spacecraft’s imaging equipment. The image in question was captured using a system of “dual” cameras called a “Terminal Tracking Camera” (T2CAM).
According to recently available information, the Lucy spacecraft has been in outer space since the end of last year, that is, October 16, 2021. In other words, it has been there for nearly a year. But in the past few days, I’ve gone into the process of getting ready to go to Jupiter.
As the information reveals, Lucy participates in the first mission whose main goal is to explore asteroids Trojans. These are the remnants of the basic materials that formed the outer planets of the solar system.
In short, these asteroids in turn revolve around the sun divided into two groups: one in front of Jupiter and the other behind it. In order to reach them, Lucy will have to receive help from three gravity aids on Earth.
