President Vladimir Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of the Ukrainian regions of Kherson and Zaporizhia under Russian rule. This decision comes the day before the celebration of the merger in the Russian territory. SIC commentator Jose Milhazes explains why.

Ukraine will only become independent for one night, as the annexation of the four regions is already planned for Friday. Moscow is preparing for a celebration to welcome these regions into Russia
“We will have hostility from patriotism in Russia. Putin will insist on the style of patriotism, he will make an official speech in the Kremlin, and both houses of parliament will immediately support the president. He will give a very patriotic speech that Russia is under attack by the West and NATO,” he says, adding It is possible that Putin will present “a peace proposal already known that Ukraine cannot accept.”
