Tech giant Meta (the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) is creating a social network to compete with Twitter, to launch it “as quickly as possible”, according to the niche media “The Verge”.
In an internal meeting, Meta product manager Chris Cox called the new platform, which Meta has been working on since January, “a Twitter response” and said it would use Instagram’s account system to automatically populate user information.
“Creators and public figures care about having a platform that is managed prudently, and that they can trust,” said Chris Cox, which is interpreted as a sign that users and businesses have mistrusted Twitter since Elon Musk bought the app. last year.
Chris Cox also stressed that the app will be based on “security (and) being easy to use and reliable”.
The internal name of the social network is “Project 92”, and its generic name could be “Threads” (Threads in English), according to internal documents that “The Verge” had access to.
The new standalone app will be based on Instagram and, according to images posted on social media, will be very similar to Instagram’s comments section, but with the option to repost other users’ messages, similar to a “retweet”.
The app will be integrated into ActivityPub, an open source decentralized social media protocol, allowing users of the new app to take their accounts and followers to other apps like Mastodon.
Some celebrities have already committed to using the app, said Chris Cox, such as music producer DJ Slime. He also said he is in talks with figures such as TV presenter Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama.
