Anna was 21 years old when she met Marko Rubinek. In 1985, the Slovenian priest was already a rising star in the European Catholic Church. That year, Anna was studying at medical school and had a dream of becoming a missionary: in fact, it was this dream that prompted the young Italian woman to seek to deepen her Catholic faith. “I was also passionate about art, and a nun I knew introduced me to this Jesuit painter who had a small studio in Piazza del Gesù in Rome,” Anna told Domani. “Rupnik was ten years older than me and was in his first year of priesthood. I felt comfortable with him and he quickly became my spiritual guide.
Fascinated by painting, Anna began to frequent Rupnik’s studio, like many other young people who gradually formed the influential group that gravitated around the Slovenian artist. “I felt important to him. “I loved his paintings and we talked a lot while he painted,” Anna recalled. “He even began to emphasize the communication between us, telling me that every gesture had a specific meaning: a simple handshake or a touch on the arm was an opportunity to emphasize my femininity.
