The Madeira government has been satisfied with the resumption of tourism in the UK, but the regional executive has warned that residents must continue to bear responsibility at the risk of the government having to step back in managing the pandemic.
“More than announcing new measures, residents must continue to be vigilant in their protection. If things do not go well, the government is obligated to take a step back. Nobody wants to take this step. We are doing our best to keep the activity going.” We cannot risk that half a dozen individuals will corrupt the work of thousands of people. You must have this sense of civic responsibility. Neither the government nor the police authorities have an element to prosecute every citizen. Responsibility comes first from our behavior. Pedro Calado said, while initiating Construction work at New Madeira Hospital, “It is better to have a slower, more gradual, but sustainable restart than a breakdown.”
The official considered the recovery of tourism in the United Kingdom a positive thing, and reiterated that Madeira “has everything ready to receive the first tourists” after a difficult year.
We feel we have done our job in protecting public health. It is a year in which Madeira did everything in its power not to halt its economic activity. Within 14 months of the pandemic, we had only 12 days to close activity at the start of March 2020. Since then, with some adjustment, the economy has been operating, ”the government official emphasized.
