aPassengers were carried on 2,846 aircraft (commercial flights), which is a year-on-year change of +5.6%.
“Compared to April 2019 (the pre-pandemic period), there was also a growth of +41.7% in passenger traffic and +26.8% in aircraft traffic,” explains DREM.
According to the regional authority, each plane carried, on average, about 155 passengers (146 in April 2022), at Madeira airport, while in Porto Santo this number reached 81 passengers (63 in the same month).
In April 2023, domestic and international passenger traffic at the region’s airports registered positive year-on-year changes, with domestic traffic (+13.5%) growing more than international traffic (+11.8%).
DREM also mentions that at Madeira Airport, international traffic predominated (53.5%) compared to domestic traffic (46.5% of the total), while at Porto Santo Airport there was a predominance of domestic traffic (80.3% of the total), but with greater disparity compared to March the past.
The statistical body also indicates that in the first four months of 2023, passengers embarked and disembarked at the two airports located in the archipelago numbered 1,466.1 thousand, half of which correspond to traffic exclusively between airports located in the national territory, which includes domestic and domestic connections. (47.3% of the total) and the other half is international (52.7%).
The UK was the main country and main departure point for international flights from RAM airports (34.9%), followed by Germany (21.5%) and France (7.9%).
