President Lula, who is in Shanghai tonight, says he hopes to be able to convince Xi Jinping that China joins a group of countries – along with Brazil, Indonesia and India – that will try to reach a negotiated peace for Ukraine.
In remarks made in the meantime, the Brazilian president said that perhaps Kiev should cede Crimea to Russia and that Russia should consider the possibility of abandoning the integration of Ukrainian territories which it has decided to do unilaterally.
In diplomacy one always learns and I have a strong hope that President Lula, using this method of presenting these proposals in the public arena, as well as an official visit to a power that must already have some thoughts on the matter well settled, know what you are doing And, in the end, they end up giving us a business lesson, and delivering a nice surprise.
I do not forget, however, and I hope Brazil will not forget either the humiliation that Brazilian diplomacy suffered in 2010, when it sought and ended up with Turkey to intervene, with some ease, in the nuclear issue with Iran. Taken from the game No Honor or Glory. By then Brazil should have learned that trying to “beat above one’s weight” is risky, that is, sometimes the sand is too much for your wagon.
Having said that, let it be clear: if Brazil can find a peaceful solution for Ukraine, the world will be very grateful and Brazil’s brilliant diplomacy will be highly regarded. But if it doesn’t, then maybe Lula should put this down to the advice of the person who really led him to miscalculate in 2010: Celso Amorim.
