cUsually we put cushions in the sun to avoid mites and fungus, right? wrong. Immunologist Ana Caroline Dela Bianca, of the Brazilian Society of Allergy and Immunology (ASBAI), recommends stopping doing this as soon as possible.
According to the specialist, these microorganisms responsible for causing allergies settle inside the pillows and not on the surface. “If the pillow is exposed to sunlight, the temperature of the interior will rise, which helps the multiplication of mites, fungi and bacteria,” explains Anna Caroline Della Bianca, in statements to the Metropolis newspaper.

As such, the ideal is to leave the pillows in a well-ventilated area, keeping them protected by pillowcases, with only indirect light reaching them.
Immunologist ASBAI also shares some tips that will help you keep your pillows clean:
- Ideally, cleaning should be done in laundries. Home use machines may not have the performance needed to fully dry the pillow;
- Pillowcases should be washed every three to four weeks;
- pads should be changed every two years;
- Try not to scrub and scrub the bedroom furniture while cleaning. To prevent mites from settling on clean sheets and pillowcases, give preference to using damp cloths.
