In the last chance for the sprinters in this second week of the Tour de France, Jasper “Mr.” Philipsen won for the third time in this edition of the Tour, beating Wout van Aert and Pascal Ackerman in a rough finish. Among the favorites, it is Primoz Roglic who did not start and Juan Ayuso who retired at the start of the stage.
The last chance for the sprinters in the second week of the Tour de France came in Pau. Stage 13 started in Agen, a town of 30,000 inhabitants about 30 kilometres south of Villeneuve-sur-Lot, the place of yesterday’s finish. The Tour starts in Agen for the fifth time. Agen is ideally located for the transition to the Pyrenees in the south, a direction we also follow today to Pau. After Paris and Bordeaux, Pau is the most visited city on the Tour. The stage has already started 67 times, and today is the finish for the 62nd time.
Before the start, the news of the day was the departure of Primoz Roglic, the Slovenian and his team opting to withdraw after the crash he suffered in yesterday’s stage to better recover and look for new objectives. Once they got going, the cyclist struggled to keep up with the group and was soon abandoned. Juan Ayuso was the Spaniard who “did not cooperate” in the relay with Joao Almeida and Tadej Pogacar at the end of the first week. The team revealed that the cyclist tested positive for Covid-19 despite not showing symptoms.
During the stage, the side winds bothered the riders, and there were several escape attempts, one with Adam Yates, which the group fought hard against. In the end, Richard Carapaz (EF) and Tobias Haaland (Uno-X) made the biggest escape, but they were caught 23 km from the finish. There was also another escape attempt, but today would belong to the sprinters.
In the final sprint, a collapse in part of the field caused several cyclists to fall to the ground, who received medical attention at the same time as the winner. On the other side of the race, Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin) won unscathed by more than a bike ahead of Wout van Aert (Visma) who finished second and Pascal Ackermann (ISR) who completed the podium.
