Yoshimasa Hayashi begins a five-day trip to London and Paris this Tuesday, focusing on Japan’s participation in a Ukraine recovery conference in the United Kingdom and another forum, in the French capital, focused on financing developing countries.
Leaders and foreign ministers from about 60 countries, along with Ukrainian officials and dozens of business representatives, are participating in the London forum, which is seeking public and private financing plans to rebuild Ukraine.
The meeting, convened under the current Japanese presidency of the G7, will take place after the leaders of the G7 bloc (Japan, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Canada and the United States) met in the Japanese city of Hiroshima in May. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky was the guest at the summit.
In addition to aid to Ukraine, Hayashi and other foreign ministers are expected to discuss the results of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s recent visit to China, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
This week’s meeting is the third meeting of G7 foreign ministers to be held under the presidency of Japan.
On Monday, Japan and Ukraine signed a cooperation agreement to rebuild Ukrainian infrastructure damaged by the Russian invasion, drawing on the experience of Japanese experts after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
