DrDonald L. Irwin, 59, left his home one morning in December 2013 to buy tobacco and never returned. A decade later, his car was found at the bottom of a lake in Camden, USA. The discovery was made last December by a diver.
Irwin's family searched for him for years, along with friends and neighbors, in the mountainous area near the house where he lived, according to the New York Times. “I didn’t stop for nine years,” Irwin’s sister, Yvonne Irwin-Bowen, said in an interview. The woman revealed that she travels twice a year to participate in the search for her brother.
Last year, Yvonne gave up and did not participate in the searches. “I put it in God’s hands,” the woman said.
In December, she was surprised by a call from a friend, who revealed that a divers had found her brother's car, about eight kilometers from home. The car was in a lake and was recovered on December 16.
Diver James Hinkle said he had been aware of the case for two years. He began searching the lakes near the missing man's home. On December 14, he saw what appeared to be a floating tire. As it approached, “it looked more and more like a car,” the diver revealed.
Several days later, investigators and police dogs eventually found remains belonging to Irwin. The victim's sister, who thought her brother was dead, said, “It's a new heartbreak,” and stressed that “accepting reality is a completely different matter.”
Yvonne Irwin Bowen also said she hopes her story will inspire other families in similar situations. “Never stop looking. Never give up,” the woman said.
