On Monday, the Russian Federation proposed that a motion condemning Russia be voted on in the United Nations General Assembly in secret. However, the proposal failed – but more important than the rule of procedure is the fact that India, which usually abstains from voting at the United Nations related to the conflict in Ukraine, voted against the Russian proposal.
The motion being discussed by the member states of the General Assembly is a vote Russia’s condemnation of the “unlawful annexation” of the territories of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson, after “referendums in name only”. The United States and Albania already proposed last week for a vote on it in the Security Council, where it was rejected because Russia exercised its veto as a permanent member, AFP explained.
It will now be voted on in the General Assembly, where 193 countries have seats.
In the Security Council we proposed voting on a document that was against us. Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzia asked: How does this help in resolving the conflict?
