In response to India, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson asked the Indian government to remain “calm and objective.”
India this week lodged a “strong protest” against Beijing following the publication of China’s new official map.
The map released on Monday shows the state of Arunachal Pradesh in northeastern India and the Aksai Chin plateau in the Kashmir region as part of China.
“Today we presented [terça-feira] Strong protest through diplomatic channels with China regarding China’s so-called ‘standard map’ of 2023, which claims territory from India. “We reject these allegations as they are baseless,” Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Arindam Bagchi said in a statement.
The official map of China is released every year and published by the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources. Arunachal Pradesh has long been under Indian rule, but Beijing claims it as a region of southern Tibet, after it was the scene of armed clashes over its control in 1962.
The Aksai-Chin Plateau is divided between the two countries, and most of it is administered by China as part of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.
In response to Bagchi, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the publication of the map was “routine” and called on the Indian government to remain “calm and objective.”
This is another chapter in the already long history of tensions between China and India, which have repeatedly engaged in small-scale military skirmishes along their disputed border.
According to what was reported by CNN InternationalTensions between the two governments increased significantly after the clashes that took place in the Galwan Valley in 2020, which resulted in the deaths of dozens of soldiers on both sides.
In an attempt to calm tensions, the leaders of the two countries, Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi, held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit held in South Africa, but according to what Reuters reported, citing sources from the two countries, the Chinese President is expected to deal a new blow to relations with New Delhi and miss the meeting. The next G20 summit will be held between September 9 and 10 in the Indian capital.
