Former US President Donald Trump said in a speech on Saturday evening that Vladimir Putin is “a smart man of course” but “the main problem is that our leaders are stupid and allow him to continue this attack on humanity.” In that speech, in which he also praised Volodymyr Zelensky – “He’s a brave man, he’s a stickler…” – Trump, while in the White House, said, “Putin respected America.”
At an annual conference linked to the conservative movement in the United States, Donald Trump did not take the opportunity to paraphrase the praise he gave the Russian leader. As Russian forces entered Ukraine late last week, Trump referred to Putin as a “genius” and praised the Russian president’s strategic gifts, though he did not say he approved of what Putin was doing.
Along the same lines, once again deeming President Putin a “smart” leader, Trump said the Russian president “does whatever he wants” to US President Joe Biden. “It’s not nice to look at,” Donald Trump added.
