Iberdrola will invest 150 million pounds (around 170 million euros) in the construction of a green hydrogen unit to decarbonize Felixstowe, the UK’s largest cargo port.
The new unit, which will start operations in 2026, will initially have a capacity to produce 14,000 tonnes of renewable H2 per year, which will double in the future. It will supply green hydrogen to vehicles and machinery used by the port and will be able to supply 1,300 hydrogen-powered trucks, Iberdrola explained in a statement.
It will also be used to provide non-polluting fuel for vehicles carrying cargo to the port and will be used in the production of green ammonia or ethanol, which will provide clean fuel for maritime transport and create opportunities for it. Export to other international markets.
The group’s UK subsidiary, ScottishPower, is developing the project in partnership with Hutchison Ports, and is expected to be sited on derelict land within the port.
