Greener and fresher: here is the new Notre Dame cathedral
Final plans to renovate the Parisian monument have been revealed and bring a lot of news to City Island.
Notre Dame looks to the future, this is how officials imagine the end result of recovery plans that began after a serious fire in 2019. The project also aims to completely renovate the area around Ilha da Cidade.
“The project rethinks all the symbolic public spaces around Notre Dame as a result of the climatic atmosphere,” justified the landscape architecture studio responsible for this aspect of the project, Bureau Bas Smets, citing Travel + Leisure.
In this sense, the cathedral would benefit from a larger square at the back, as well as a new green lawn. An underground passage will also be established for tourists to access an archaeological museum and reception centre.
“The new spaces frame new views of the cathedral, establish a new relationship with the Seine and introduce new activities. Ilha da Cidade becomes the center of the city once again”, explain the architects.
The environmental aspect of the project also has the support of the city’s mayor, Ann Hidalgo, who revealed to the New York Times that the district will have an additional 30 green areas per center. The main square in front of Notre Dame will also have a cooling system that will be used during heat waves.
“Notre Dame must be left intact with its beauty, but also let the surrounding area serve to enhance its beauty,” Hidalgo revealed. On environmental concerns, the mayor explains that “a city like Paris cannot ignore climate change.”
President Emmanuel Macron has said his goal is to complete the work by 2024, the year Paris will host the Olympics.
