Today, in Porto, the Minister of Health, Manuel Pizarro, said that if undifferentiated doctors are assigned to health centers, this resource will be temporary and these professionals will not have a list of users.
Speaking to reporters, on the sidelines of a visit to the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO) in Porto, Manuel Pizarro said that “the government’s goal is to enable every Portuguese person to have access to the family health team”, but “something else” is “temporary” recourse to “doctors”. others”.
“Could, temporarily, in order to facilitate access to primary health care, while we cannot have a family health team for everyone, can we count on the participation of other doctors? We will be able to find out, but we will not mix things up,” the minister said.
When asked if these non-family medicine doctors would have a list of patients, Manuel Pizarro said emphatically: “Of course not.”
“One thing is the team and family health, and another thing is that it is not yet possible – and it will not be possible in the next two or three years – to ensure a family health team for all Portuguese people, we can establish and make clear that the mechanisms that facilitate access to primary health care using medical doctors They are not specialists.
Earlier, in a speech at the presentation ceremony of the new Board of Directors management team for its IPO in Porto for the 2022/2024 period, Manuel Pizarro spoke about the state budget (OE) for 2023, stressing that it has “the largest ever allocation to health”.
He stressed that the Ministry of Health expects to employ 400 to 500 family doctors this year and to open 1,000 vacancies for specialists.
Manuel Pizarro also spoke about the renegotiation of professions with doctors as a way to motivate professionals, having already faced them on the sidelines of the session with a similar question about nurses.
“He will start negotiating with the nurses even before negotiating with the doctors, and I expect we will have very positive results in the very short term,” he said.
