Benfica’s handball team qualified for the Super Cup final, after beating Porto 37-36 on Saturday, after two extra times.
With the match being held in the Municipal Pavilion of Carlos Pinhao, in Serpa, the Dragon started the match well but soon the Red team dominated the first half from eight minutes until the end of the first half, taking advantage of one goal to the dressing rooms (17-16).
In the second half, the blue and white team won, managed to recover from deprivation and consolidate the result in their favour. In the last five minutes, Benfica woke up and tied with ten seconds remaining (31-31). Mention to Rui Silva (FC Porto), who was expelled at the last minute of regulation time.
With extensions unsuitable for heart patients, the balance remained but the Reds were stronger and emerged victorious. With Sergi Hernandez defending an attack from Porto with ten seconds left, Serbian Petar Djordic scored the winning goal for the Eagles one second before.
Thus, Benfica secured a place in the Super Cup final, and awaits the result of the other semi-final between Sporting and Belenenses. The competition final will take place on Sunday at 19:00.
