Summer is about to arrive in Portugal, quite literally. Three new Google Maps updates are also coming to help users get the most out of their summer adventures.
1. Immersive visualization
Immersive View launched earlier this year to transform the way you explore – using artificial intelligence to combine billions of images and create a multi-dimensional view of the world with layered information overlays.
Arrives in June in four new cities: Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence and Venice. But it will also be expanded to 500 iconic landmarks around the world, including Belém Tower, Jeronimos Monastery, Porto Cathedral and more.
The goal is for the user to start getting to know the area before they visit it. By searching for it on Google Maps and clicking on the first video to actually fly over the building and find nearby locations.
2. Track your travel progress through display directions
The directions that can be displayed on the maps help the user to easily follow the progress of their trip right on their smartphone lock screen or in the route overview.
It should be noted that visual directions will start to be available during the month of June, globally on Android and iOS for walking, cycling and driving patterns.
3. Plan trips with updates on the Recent tab on your desktop
In the new Recents tab, the places the user searches are automatically organized into a very useful highlight in the sidebar of the screen. Places in Recent Places will be saved even after you close the Google Maps window.
The point is that you can take a break from planning and come back later without getting lost in the course of your research. You can remove the places you’ve seen, plan multiple trips at once, and share a selection of places – like attractions or hotels.
Once you’ve made a decision, you can select three or more destinations, tap “Ask for directions” and Maps will create a custom route with all the marked places and save the same route in the last tab.
