Gmail will now require additional verification to change certain types of account settings that are sensitive. The change is intended to strengthen users’ security against hackers and was announced by Google on Wednesday (23).
According to Google, the additional protection will apply to attempts to create, modify, or import filters and add a new forwarding address in your Forwarding and POP/IMAP settings. Enabling IMAP through Settings will also turn on the email service beep.
When you perform one of these actions, the system will perform an immediate evaluation. If you consider this to be a risky situation, it will require the user to prove that they are the owner of this account through the “Verify your identity” notice.
In this case, Gmail will require recognition of a second device, through 2-Step Verification, so that the user can complete the required action by verifying their identity. This may include sending an SMS to the cell phone registered to the profile, for example.
authentication
If the verification required by Gmail does not complete successfully, changes to settings will not be released. In addition, the account owner will receive a “Critical Security Alert” on their trusted devices informing them of any possible suspicious activity.
The extra protection is useful in cases where access to Gmail has been compromised for whatever reason. Thus, it is possible to prevent unauthorized persons from using filters to hide messages about purchases, confidential changes or forward messages to third parties, among other things.
The new Gmail security feature is being rolled out gradually, and it may take up to 15 days to reach all free users. For those with a Google Workspace subscription, the tool will be offered starting September 6, and should be released within a maximum of three days.
two steps
2-Step Verification is an essential security measure to protect your Google Account and access to other company products like Gmail and Drive. The process takes place with the help of your cell phone: you can receive a code via email or call and still be able to approve requests through the Google app.
This extra layer of protection is useful in cases where, for whatever reason, access to Gmail is compromised or compromised. Thus, it is possible to prevent unauthorized persons from using filters to hide messages about purchases and confidential changes or to forward messages to third parties, for example.
Recently, Gmail has also been enhanced with client-side encryption (CSE), which is a way to protect and control access to personal or corporate data.
