On Friday, the live broadcasting service announced that the special episode of “Friends”, which will focus on reuniting the series’ six friends after a 17-year absence, will premier on HBO Portugal on May 27.
The special will feature many guests, including Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, David Beckham, Reese Witherspoon, James Corden or K-pop group BTS.
The arrival of the episode initially coincided with the launch of the HBO Max platform at the end of May 2020, which received the entire “Friends” catalog. But the pandemic forced production to postpone recordings, which finally happened in April, in Burbank, California.
On Wednesday, HBO Max published a teaser trailer for the return:
“The episode in which they get back together,” says the episode title, using the same style as the series’ episodic title, which always begins with “The One.”
Starring Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer, Friends (1994-2004) was a huge hit and saw an entire generation of viewers. Her arrival at Netflix in 2015 allowed the platform to reach a new audience, confirming the sitcom’s continued popularity, a genre that many have claimed is in decline.
In 2019, AT&T’s WarnerMedia Group reclaimed the rights to broadcast the most popular series of the past 20 years, for $ 425 million over five years.
All 236 “Friends” episodes have been available on HBO Max since May 2020. The series can also be watched on HBO Portugal, which has yet to confirm the premiere of the special episode.
According to Variety, the six actors, who are the co-executive producers of the special episode, negotiated a salary of $ 2.5 million for all the recordings.
