Coach Frank Vogel has lost three games since he entered health and safety protocols last weekend. Over the course of the week, the Lakers lost all of those games and are now losing more than a 16-win campaign.
After a three-game winning streak last week, a virus outbreak rocked the team, meanwhile, six players entered into health and safety protocol.
Many Lakers fans seem to be looking for a scapegoat this season, and much of the blame has been placed on Vogel. The last passive run without him seems to have drowned out some noise so far, but even if Vogel was with the team last week, the results will likely be the same. The outbreak further damaged team rotation and affected ongoing team co-ordination.
Lakers assistant David Wiesdel took over as interim coach in Vogel’s absence. Fizdale updated Vogel’s status in an interview.
“Frank is the best. He’s doing a great job. I think we should wait and see what happens to test Frank and go from here… I’m ready if they need me to take that seat and I’m ready to be there to support Frank. It’s a daily situation and let’s not get caught up in how miserable it is.” Everything or how everything is annoying, because all we can control is our response to it and my response is service.”
This appears to indicate that Vogel did indeed contract the virus, and that the test result was positive. Vogel appears to have taken the appropriate protocols and has been isolated. With the current COVID comeback schedule, Vogel may be back with the Lakers soon.
