The Municipal Health Department of Limoiro, in the Agreste district of Pernambuco, has issued a statement reporting four suspected cases of monkeypox among the inmates of Dotor Año Pessoa Guerra prison. The four men, deprived of liberty, have no recent history of traveling to endemic sites. Detainees are isolated and subject to national health protocols.
The State Department of Health (SES-PE) reported, through a memo, that it is aware of four suspected cases of monkeypox being reported at the reformatory. The inmates range in age from 19 to 28, and are isolated in the prison unit dispensary. The secretariat also reported conducting tests to detect sexually transmitted diseases, as well as collecting tests for laboratory diagnosis of other diseases, such as chickenpox and monkeypox itself.
According to the state Department of Health, the collected samples will be sent to the Vicruz/RJ Enterovirus Laboratory, a reference for diagnosing monkeypox, and to the Central Laboratory of Public Health in Pernambuco (Lacen-PE), which will carry out investigations for other diseases.
As of the last bulletin from the SES, Pernambuco had recorded seven confirmed cases of the disease, in addition to 11 cases under investigation. Lemon tree cases have not yet been calculated. The Secretariat informed that it would publish a new budget later on Thursday (4).
Pernambuco confirmed its first imported case, on 6 July, involving a São Paulo resident who had come to the greater city of Recife for a season.
On July 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a global health emergency. To date, more than 16,000 cases of the disease have been reported in 75 countries. A total of five deaths have already been confirmed.
