A new and exclusive analysis by CNN, using artificial intelligence, has revealed a significant amount of devastation in Gaza in satellite images.
Large areas of buildings were destroyed in the vicinity of Gaza City, Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun. A large portion of the damage that CNN was able to confirm is located in northern Gaza.
Hundreds of craters were also identified in northern Gaza.
CNN was able to identify areas of devastation in Gaza using satellite images from Planet Labs, working with Synthetaic – a company that uses artificial intelligence to identify and classify data, including satellite images.
Using images from across the Gaza Strip from Planet Labs, Synthetaic analyzes and compares them through an AI-based Rapid Automated Image Classification (RAIC) system, looking for devastation such as damaged and destroyed buildings, as well as impact craters. With the help of what the RAIC identified as destruction, CNN takes images from Planet Labs and does its own analysis to independently confirm the destruction.
The result is a snapshot of the devastation that occurred in Gaza.
CNN’s analysis continues, and is expected to identify additional areas of devastation in Gaza, especially as the Israeli army continues to expand its ground operations in the Strip. This analysis also differs from CNN’s previous analysis, which used Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar to identify damage.
It is impossible to obtain a complete and comprehensive map of the destruction in Gaza without conducting a field survey.
