Since the inauguration of Rishi Sunak's government, the number of settlers on British shores is estimated to have reached 40,000.
But this Monday It was the busiest day of the year, with 401 migrants arriving on seven boats crossing the English Channel to the UK.According to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The latest crossings bring the provisional total number of arrivals to 2,983 this year alone.
The data suggests an average of 41 people per boat, apart from a single-day peak of 401 since early 2024.
On Sunday, a day earlier, eight boats crossed the canal with 327 migrants. That is, 728 people registered in 48 hours.
The second highest daily total documented to date in 2024 was 358 migrants, who arrived on January 17 in eight boats.
Home Office figures indicate that 40,000 migrants will have arrived in the UK since Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister in October 2022.
Labour's Yvette Cooper spared no criticism of Sunak: “The Prime Minister promised the British people he would stop the boats, but now more than 40,000 have arrived under his watch.
And he insists: “This is the Prime Minister who has said his strategy is working, but is presiding over the busiest start of the year in terms of Channel crossings”.
Cooper argues that independent reports show that border security has “become a farce.” He also highlighted that “billions are being spent on hotels” to house migrants.
For its part, the British executive insists that efforts to control crossings of the English Channel are making a difference.
The Prime Minister's official spokesperson, still talking about the latest talks with Paris, said, “The UK and France have agreed a new customs partnership to disrupt the supply chain for small craft goods.
Number 10 Downing Street argues that joint work between London and Paris is “already producing results”, with more than 26,000 crossing attempts averted by 2023, representing a “47 per cent interception rate”.
