England beat the West Indies in the first day-night test played in the United Kingdom on this day in 2017.
Joe Root’s side took 19 wickets on a stunning third day at Edgbaston to defeat the tourists by an innings and 209 runs.
West Indies were dismissed, 44 to one overnight in reply to England’s 514 to 8, for 168 and 137.
“We were unrelenting in our handling of the wicket, which worked out quite a bit,” said England captain Root.
“When you have the ability of (Stuart) Broad and (James) Anderson and the other players, it can be difficult for the opponent.
“Now we have an extra day off for the players to put their feet up.”
Broad took three for 34 in the second innings to overtake Sir Ian Botham for second place in the list of England’s all-time greatest wicket-takers.
The West Indies had not won a Test in the United Kingdom for 17 years and capitulated under cloudy skies which made bowling conditions favourable.
The 19 wickets they lost was the most in a single day of Test cricket.
The West Indies pulled out the three-match series with a five-wicket victory at Headingley.
But England won by a Lord’s decision by nine wickets as the West Indies’ weaknesses were again exposed, and were bowled out for 123 and 177, with Ben Stokes taking six wickets in the first innings and James Anderson seven in the second.
