EDP begins construction of the first 20 MW solar parks in the Netherlands
Kronos Solar EDPR’s new solar projects in the Netherlands will have an installed capacity of 20.6 MW and more than 46,000 bifacial photovoltaic solar panels.
EDP Renováveis announced on Tuesday that it will begin construction of its first two solar PV projects in the Netherlands after acquiring a 70% stake in Kronos Solar in 2022.
Both projects are located in the central-eastern region of the northern European country, and the combined installed capacity will be 20.6 MW and more than 46,000 bifacial photovoltaic solar panels, which will make it possible to benefit from solar radiation on both sides and maximize renewable production.
EDP Renováveis expects to start construction on other projects in the Netherlands within a few months. Currently, these projects will produce enough electricity to power about 9,000 homes a year and help avoid the emission of more than 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year in the province of Gelderland.
“Placing these photovoltaic plants under construction demonstrates the ability of EDP Renováveis to develop projects in new and important geographies, expanding our clean energy portfolio. With Kronos Solar EDPR, we are determined to continue to promote solar energy growth in the coming years,” Duarte highlighted. Bello, Director of Operations for EDP Renováveis in Europe and Latin America, in the same statement.
Kronos Solar has over 1.4 GW EDPR in 80 projects and 9.4 GW solar projects in various stages of development in Germany, France, the Netherlands and the UK. Solar energy currently accounts for 12% of EDP Renováveis’ projects. In the update of the Business Plan 2023-2026, implemented at the beginning of March, EDP announced an investment of 25 billion euros in energy transformation: 80% in renewable energy projects, of which 40% in onshore technologies and in European countries.
The company wants to reach a technology mix where about half of its portfolio will be in solar energy, with 40% coming from large projects and 10% in decentralized solar.
