Yesterday, the President of the Republic issued the diploma that cancels the exchange of driver’s licenses for holders of titles issued by the countries of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This measure will benefit all immigrants from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor, as well as nationals of Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica. USA, Israel, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Switzerland and Turkey.
Until now, only citizens of EU member states, the United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein can live in Portugal and continue to drive in the national territory with the document issued in their country of origin. All other immigrants were required to obtain a new permit within 90 days of obtaining residency in Portugal. The document cost was an approximation of €30 and required a medical evaluation. For the heavyweight category, a psychological evaluation was also required.
If they do not request the new documents from the Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes (IMT) within three months, they are no longer allowed to drive in Portugal. After more than two years without any request, the renewal required a new test drive.
A foreign driver’s license can be used for countries covered by the new exemption system until the end of its validity. Only then is it switched to the Portuguese letter.
