A recent survey by travel research site WayAway revealed that 24% of women canceled a trip due to safety concerns. Previously, a WayAway survey also showed that women think traveling alone is four times more unsafe than men.
According to the new ranking, Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, is the safest city for women. The list ranks the 30 safest cities for women traveling alone, and in the top five are San Juan (Puerto Rico), Budapest (Hungary), Singapore (Singapore) and Madrid (Spain).
In the list of 30 cities, none are Portuguese, 12 are in North America (Boston is 7th and New York is 24th for example) and five are in Asia (such as Tokyo and Hong Kong are 14th). and 15th) and 11th in Europe (Berlin at 10 and Amsterdam at 20, for example).
For this ranking, three factors were considered: the independent security rating from companies such as The Economist, Conde Nast, Time Out and Resonance Consultancy; the latest safety reports from the Numbeo Crime Index, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection and data from Travelsafe-Overseas; and interviews with local residents who helped write WayAway guides.
