Georgia voters chose Reverend Raphael Warnock to fill the last vacant Senate seat, giving Democrats more clout in the Senate.
According to press estimates in the United States, Warnock, 53, won re-election by defeating Republican Herschel Walker, the former American football star, who is supported by Donald Trump.
Raphael Warnock polled about 37,000 votes more than Herschel Walker in the first round on November 8. However, the Democrat failed to achieve a majority, which required a second round, this time on a vote without a third candidate.
With a controversial profile, Herschel Walker came under fire in the midterm campaign after taking a firm stand against abortion, despite two women accusing him of funding an interruption of pregnancy.
Raphael Warnock, backed by former President Barack Obama and seeking re-election, is pastor at Martin Luther King Jr. School. and the first African-American senator from Georgia.
It was the fourth campaign in two years for Raphael Warnock, who first ran in 2020 against Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler to complete the term of former Sen. Johnny Isakson. That race went to a second round in January 2021, which was won by the Democrat.
With the victory of Raphael Warnock, the Democrats gained 51 Senate seats, compared to the Republicans’ 49.
Senate control did not depend on this election, because Democrats have already secured a majority with the 50 seats they won in the midterm elections, which joined the tiebreaker vote of Vice President Kamala Harris.
The election of Raphael Warnock also marked a setback for Donald Trump’s recently launched 2024 presidential campaign, with the former head of state openly declaring his support for Herschel Walker.
It was the fifth time in four years that Georgians had gone to the polls – four times for the midterm elections and once for the presidential elections. This is due to an anomaly in state election law that requires winning candidates for state office in the general election to not only receive more votes than everyone else, but at least 50% of the votes cast.
