oh The United Kingdom once again hosted a major extreme sporting event on Monday.
Hundreds of spectators gathered to watch dozens of runners chase a three-pound wheel of double Gloucester cheese up a steep hill near Gloucester in southwest England, according to the Associated Press.
The concept is simple: the first runner to finish the cheese chasing course (which always reaches the highest speed) wins it.
The race has been held at Cooper’s Hill, 100 miles west of London, since 1826 or earlier.
The event, while fun, often involves safety concerns. Because there are few competitors who are standing during the entire descent of the nearly 180 meter hill – and, this year, some were stumbling and had to be helped off the course.
Canadian competitor Delaney Irving, 19, won the women’s event despite briefly fainting.
Matt Crolla, 28, of Manchester, England, won the first of many men’s races.
