Several European countries are exposed to a cold wave, which led to the closure of hundreds of roads in different regions of the continent.
There are 30 Spanish provinces on alert due to the cold. An air mass coming from the North Pole leaves several regions covered with ice and snow and has already forced to cut dozens of roads. Meteorologists say Storm Juliet will remain over Spain until at least Thursday.
In Catalonia, the negative temperature record was broken. In Lleida, thermometers reached nearly minus 19 degrees.
The Balearic Islands are on orange alert, the second highest on the scale, and residents and tourists are surprised by how cold it is.
“It’s a picture we haven’t had in Mallorca in 12 years,” one of the islanders admitted.
The south of France is also affected and there are many snow-covered areas with thermometers below zero.
From Toulouse to Marseille, the authorities have asked people to be careful and avoid driving on roads where ice has already caused many accidents.
In the Balkans, despite the fact that harsh winters are now commonplace, residents of various cities and towns of Bosnia and Herzegovina were left without water and without electricity, on Monday, due to heavy snowfall.
In many localities, the water supply is still out of order and electricity has not yet been restored, leaving thousands of homes in the dark and people in the cold, without being able to turn on the heating.
Schools are closed in several provinces. Many roads are blocked and many transportation services are suspended.
