On Lake Maggiore, in Italy, the Giodoria, a tourist boat with a capacity of about twenty people, was sailing calmly on a tour. Until, unexpectedly, a violent storm capsized, killing four people on board – two Italians, an Israeli citizen and a Russian.
What at first appeared to be a simple human tragedy, soon began to take on “strange” features, as information was gathered: the passengers were not checked into any hotel, and as they were identified, the Italian authorities found that they were about to Members of the Italian intelligence community, as well as former spies and spies of the Israeli Mossad. Within hours of the crash, the surviving foreigners were quickly flown back to Israel on chartered planes, without being questioned.
The case, which seems to have jumped straight out of the pages of any John Licari novel, raised a number of questions. What was the group doing in that area? Will it be just a leisure trip or is it a business trip? And what about the evidence pointing to Russian involvement in the case? Hypotheses vary, but answers are, for now, scarce.
