Today, World Clinical Trials Day, the Local Health Unit of Coimbra (ULS de Coimbra) announced the creation of a new portal dedicated to the submission and evaluation of new projects. The portal, which will be operational from June 1, is part of the Fundanet tool and allows integrated management of all research conducted at the institution.
“Today, May 20, we celebrate World Clinical Trials Day. It is a special occasion “to express our appreciation and gratitude to all those who devote time and effort every day at ULS Coimbra to research,” says Thiago Alfaro, Director of the Innovation and Development Unit at ULS Coimbra, adding that “research is The engine that drives the development and provision of innovative treatments and technologies to our users, it also plays a critical role in training and motivating our specialists and contributing to the continuous improvement of our main mission: providing patient-centered care.”
As of June 1, all research projects, with or without intervention, must be submitted through this portal, and the email submission method will no longer be valid. In the coming days, the Foundation will make the address of this portal available, along with updated forms and procedures, on the Innovation and Development Unit page, both on the intranet and on the external ULS Coimbra website.
“With this new platform, we hope to accelerate and facilitate the process of submission, approval and development of clinical research at our institution,” explains Thiago Alfaro, who calls for “the support and participation of all professionals and researchers to achieve the common goal.” ULS goal in Coimbra: more and better research.”

The Coimbra ULS Center is a national reference in scientific research, and stands out as one of the Portuguese centers with the largest number of ongoing clinical trials, with a particular focus on diseases.

ULS Coimbra has a team of around 25 people entirely dedicated to clinical research, supporting 92 active clinical trials, corresponding to 42 different principal investigators, 256 new non-interventional studies approved in 2023 alone, and 20 competitively funded innovation and development projects. Also in 2023, ULS Coimbra specialists published 298 scientific articles, illustrating the dynamics and research culture of the institution.
