Farmers use sunscreen to protect their animals’ sensitive skin at one of Britain’s biggest country shows – award-winning pig breeder Ella Mare covers her six contestants in wet towels at the Royal Welsh Show to keep them fresh. “Pigs don’t dissipate heat like other animals, so it’s hard to keep them cool,” explained the 45-year-old breeder. “We put cool wet towels on them, but we have to be careful not to let the heat dry the towels too quickly. So we’re going to keep them in the shade as much as possible and keep the fans as warm as we can,” he said.
More than 50,000 people are expected each day for the 4-day Royal Welsh Show, one of Europe’s biggest agricultural events, and organizers have been advised by public health bodies to prepare for extreme heat. As long as this extreme weather continues, we’re advising people to seek shade β and, weather permitting, we hope to reopen City Beach and the amusement park on Wednesday.
