The sale of Chelsea to businessman Todd Boehle for 4.25 billion pounds (about 5 billion euros) was halted due to disagreements between Downing Street and Roman Abramovich, according to a source close to the matter quoted by the London Times.
The deal, agreed this month, needs a “green light” from Boris Johnson’s government, but there are disagreements between the executive and Abramovich over a debt treatment of the Russian millionaire of around £1.6 billion – which the businessman resigned, after saying the money and proceeds were Selling Chelsea will go to charities.
The Times of London also reported that Buhli is pushing for the deal to be completed by the end of this month. Proceeds from the contract, which in the normal scenario would go into Abramovich’s pocket, would be deposited into a frozen UK bank account, and then donated to charities.
The English club is in serious financial difficulty, after the sanctions imposed on the current owner, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, one of the oligarchs identified as close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
