Between the 17th and 18th of April, the Secretary of State for Prison Management (SEB), together with the State University of Maranhão, received the visit of an international delegation of academics from the University of Westminster (United Kingdom) dedicated to the study. Prison systems and work in the education of people deprived of liberty.
Considering the excellent rates that the Maranhão prison system is achieving in the fields of education and work, Prof. The team, led by Sacha Darke, visited some prison units in São Luís, as well as educational and work activities.
The students were also introduced to the Integrated Center for Penal Alternatives and Social Inclusion – CIAPIS and one of the projects carried out on site with people in open prisons. In addition, it was possible to settle on new initiatives, in particular the introduction of UEMA undergraduate courses in the Maranhão prison system.
According to Prof. Dr. Andreas Aresti, University of Westminster, “What we’re trying to do is introduce people who are stuck in education, especially higher education, which we think is very important to change the lives of these people,” he points out.
“The reason I’m here today is because as someone who was in prison years ago and used higher education to get away from crime, as someone who studied inside prison, I know what it’s like and how important higher education is. I want to free myself from crime and become a teacher today”.
The secretary of SEAP, Murilo Andrade, commented that it was a great pleasure to share the positive results achieved by Maranhão. “Company visits are very important, it aims to provide and share positive experiences. That’s for sure, “It affirms and legitimizes the efforts of the Maranhão and Sieb state government to implement policies that really impact and transform the lives of inmates serving the prison system and society,” he said.
