The foreign ministers of Canada, Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom announced today that they have initiated arbitration proceedings with the International Civil Aviation Organization (OIAC) against Iran for the downing of Flight PS752 in 2020.
“This is another step on the road to transparency, justice and accountability for Iran's illegal downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, which killed 176 people,” they announced in a statement.
“For four years, Iran has refused to accept its full responsibility,” they pointed out.
For this reason, they decided to appeal to the OIAC, with the argument that Iran “used weapons against civil aircraft in flight, in violation of its international legal obligations under Article 3A of the Convention on International Civil Aviation.”
A commercial flight between Tehran and Kiev was shot down exactly four years ago on January 8, 2020, shortly after takeoff from the Iranian capital, reportedly due to a fault in the country's anti-aircraft defenses.
