Hey The Hungarian government put pressure on the US ambassador to Budapest, following US President Joe Biden's statements about Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whom he accused of being “looking for a dictatorship.”
The Guardian quoted Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó as saying: “We asked the ambassador to share with us the quote, along with the place and time. This is a very serious insult.”
Szijjarto said Biden's words were “lies” that “Budapest does not have to put up with.”
The President of the United States and the Democratic candidate for the November elections of this year, during a rally in Philadelphia, referred to a meeting held by the former North American President – and Republican candidate – Donald Trump with Orban, in Florida.
“Do you know who you'll meet today at Mar-a-Lago? Orban, from Hungary, who has already said he doesn't think democracy works. He's looking for a dictatorship,” Biden said.
A spokesperson for the US Embassy in Budapest said: “We can confirm that Ambassador Pressman has been summoned to an urgent meeting at the State Department regarding statements made by the President of the United States regarding Hungary. Ambassador Pressman always has the opportunity to discuss the state of democracy in Hungary with our ally.”
