Having already called for more guarantees and highlighted “significant obstacles” to competition in Iberia's purchase of Air Europa, the European Commission has now asked the companies for more information.
The European Commission has asked for more information in its analysis of Iberia's purchase of Air Europe, Cínco Dias wrote on Monday. This comes after Brussels had already asked for more guarantees and highlighted “significant obstacles” regarding competition.
The company's sources, quoted by the newspaper, indicate that “IAG will work to make all the required data available as soon as possible,” calling on the European Commission to allow the purchase of the airline “with all guarantees,” as they said.
“This operation will make it possible to combine the strength of Iberia and Air Europa in Spain, which will bring important benefits to consumers, the Madrid-Barajas hub and the competitiveness of our country's economy,” they added.
However, the signals coming from Brussels were not very encouraging. At the end of last February, the Financial Times reported that the European Commission requested more guarantees so that this purchase, worth 500 million euros, could be completed.
On the other hand, European authorities also point to the possibility of reducing international flights and, in this context, a possible increase in prices due to reduced competition between airlines.
The newspaper wrote that in this scenario, the airline has a “slim” chance of obtaining approval from the European body.
