In today’s proposal, which relates to 17 total allowable catches (TACs) for fisheries that relate to stocks managed exclusively by the European Union, Brussels proposes an increase of 10% for hake, 12% for fish catch, 33% for megream and 5% for blue eggs, In fishing grounds that also cover national waters.
For reductions in TACs, where increases have been proposed according to independent scientific opinions received by the CEO of the community, TACs should take a discount of 11%, those of Juliana 10% and seabream (-4%), the kind of depth to which the extension of the decision applies 2021.
With regard to horse mackerels, Brussels is leading with an overall increase of 15% in continental coastal waters, and in the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira, this will be determined by the regional fisheries management organizations.
This proposal will be updated following the conclusion of bilateral consultations with Norway, particularly cod fishing opportunities in Norwegian waters, and the United Kingdom.
According to a statement, sustainable fishing has made progress in the European Union, where 80% of TACs were identified with the maximum sustainable yield in 2022, compared to 14% in 2029, allowing for healthy maintenance of stocks.
The Brussels proposal will be the subject of a debate – usually lengthy – and a decision by the fisheries ministers of the member states, at the meeting of the Council of the European Union scheduled for 12 and 13 December.
