British Prime Minister Keir Starmer today congratulated Ursula van der Leyen on her re-appointment as European Commission president, saying she “looks forward to working closely” with Brussels after Brexit.
“I look forward to working closely with you on redefining the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU), Starmer wrote on his X social network account.
Starmer will host the European Political and Social Summit in Oxford on Thursday, which will bring together the leaders of 45 European countries, including the 27 EU member states and the United Kingdom.
The president of the European Commission was re-appointed today in Strasbourg, France, for a new five-year term by a total of 707 MEPs with 284 votes in favour, 15 abstentions and seven blank votes. A total of 720 people voted.
On 31 January 2020, the United Kingdom formally left the European Union since 1973 (‘Brexit’).
