A lawyer from Braga was prevented, on Wednesday, at Porto Airport, from boarding a Ryanair international plane bound for Las Palmas, in the Canary Islands, Spain, because he showed his citizen card on his cell phone, which is permitted by law but not… It is accepted by the airline.
Speaking to O MINHO, João Magalhães said he had filed a criminal complaint against two Ryanair employees at the PSP police station in the building: “This company has repeatedly violated the law with impunity, causing serious harm to citizens,” asserts the lawyer, Highlighting that when traveling to the so-called Schengen Area of the European Union, the use of the Citizen Card in digital format is permitted under Law 19-A/2024.
In fact, as the passenger said, the law stipulates that “the display of the data contained in the documents indicated through the id-gov application, in real time and in front of third parties, has a legal value equivalent to the value of the original documents.”
Joao Magalhaes indicates that two company employees prevented him from boarding the plane, and he will ask them to compensate for the losses he incurred while heading to this archipelago for work.
MINHO contacted Ryanair, and a staff member said – via chat on their website – that they “only accept the Digital Citizen Card on domestic flights, not on international flights”.
In this regard, João Magalhães says that the company is present on Portuguese territory, so it is obliged to comply with what national law stipulates: “They act as they want without respecting the law,” he says.
In addition to the criminal complaint with the PSP, he filed a formal complaint in the book in question and complained to the ANA (the company that manages the national airports) and to Portal da Queixa: “I will go to the end using all legal means at my disposal. This is a clear violation of the law and the rights of Portuguese citizens.”
